Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) ‘s CARISSMA automotive safety research centre has taken delivery of a new self-driving vehicle supplied by StreetDrone to serve as an open platform for the development of testing methodologies for assessment of different Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) functions.

The StreetDrone Twizy autonomous vehicle platform is a functionally safe control system built specifically for self-driving applications. StreetDrone delivered its SAE level 2 drive-by-wire system to enable researchers at CARRISMA to test topics centred on the safety of CCAM vehicles.

CARISSMA acquired the StreetDrone vehicle under the Project ANTON government-funded programme. Project ANTON is part of a complex research network project in which THI and external partners conduct joint research in innovative technologies in the field of vehicle and road safety: SAFIR (Safety for all – Innovative Research Partnership on Global Vehicle and Road Safety Systems).

Besides the SAFIR research network, the vehicle will also be used as a testing platform for developing a test field for connected and automated mobility in Ingolstadt called First Mile – IN2Lab. IN2Lab offers extended perception for automated driving vehicles using redundant infrastructure-based sensors and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communications.

The StreetDrone Twizy will also be used to teach students specifically on two master degree programmes; Automated Driving and Vehicle Safety and International Automotive Engineering. StreetDrone looks forward to the great work from the students’ projects and thesis as THI enables future engineers with invaluable practical experience on a real-world autonomous vehicle.

The use of the StreetDrone autonomous vehicle provides a significant advantage to research institutes by offering a fully open platform that allows researchers to flexibly evaluate and modify autonomous vehicle algorithms algorithm as they do the vital work of testing and validation.

Ondrej Vaculin, Professor and Head of Project ANTON, commented:

“The ANTON vehicle is an important step towards the open ecosystem for testing and validation of cooperative, connected and automated mobility at THI. The experience collected with ANTON will strengthen our contribution to the assessment of safety aspects of future mobility.”
